OBJECTIVES

To identify and select individuals with a sincere interest in the community and a desire to enhance their leadership skills and expand business and personal relationships.

PARTICIPANTS
LEADERSHIP BARTLETT actively solicits applications from all sectors of the community. A maximum of 30 people will have the opportunity to participate each year. Participants will represent all sectors of the community and generally should exhibit these characteristics:

A desire to become aware of community issues.

A desire for personal growth opportunities.

Privilege of continuing community education through Leadership Bartlett Alumni Association.
During the program class members will get to know each other and establish bonds and perspectives which will enhance their community leadership effectiveness and their understanding of the community's interaction.

STRUCTURE
The program begins with a one-day retreat during which class members become acquainted with each other, are introduced to the history and growth of the Bartlett area, and participate in a leadership exercise.
The class meets twice a month for 9 half-day sessions plus a two-night trip to Nashville. A welcome reception will be held at the beginning of January for class members and Leadership Bartlett alumni.
Class participants are required to attend the retreat and 80% of the sessions to be entitled to graduate from this program. A total commitment of time is required to achieve a complete education in each subject area. A Graduation Dinner is planned for the class and alumni where plaques will be presented to those successfully completing the program.
Each session is designed to stimulate and educate the class on the session topic; for example, the Media session shows the inter-workings of the media, not only TV but radio and newspaper.

TUITION
Tuition for the program is $700. The tuition covers all expenses, speakers and graduation. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to sponsor participants in this program. In addition, the class member's first year's dues in Leadership Bartlett Alumni Association are waived. Application deadline December 31, 2007. Click here for the 2008 application. Youth Leadership Bartlett is a community leadership program which identifies and assists talented students who want to learn more about the challenges facing their school and community; to help make better decisions, to become more involved, and to assume leadership roles within their school and community. Participation is open to sophomores and juniors currently enrolled at Bartlett and Bolton High Schools. A Selection Committee reviews completed applications to form a class of motivated, concerned students who have the desire to improve their school and community.
Minimum requirements include:
The program consists of seven sessions and takes place at various community sites. Transportation is provided from your school with the exception of the two field trips. On these occasions other arrangements will be made.
Students are expected to complete make-up school work required by classroom teachers. Absence from school is recorded as an excused absence.
Bolton or Bartlett High School has a school administrator present at all sessions. In addition, Youth Leadership Bartlett provides program presenters and adult sponsors for each session. Students experience many aspects of the community and how everything works together. They encounter "hands on" interpretations of what they have learned in textbooks.
Those students selected for participation in Youth Leadership Bartlett will be expected to pay a $125 fee to defray a portion of the cost of two out-of-town trips. Sessions include:

Designed to promote an understanding of the role of local government; to teach community awareness and participation, and to encourage school leadership activities. Class has dinner with the Mayor and Aldermen and attends the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.

Designed to familiarize the students with opportunities available within their community and to recognize the value of strong leadership skills.
March 17-18: State Government
Overnight trip to Nashville (Monday 7:00 a.m-Tuesday 5:00 p.m.)
Visit State Legislature. Designed to promote an understanding of the role of state government and awareness of the need for positive leaders.
April 8: Career Opportunity/Job Shadowing

Designed to expose students to career fields of interest and promote a desire to achieve personally and professionally.

Leadership Bartlett Alumni Association
The Leadership Bartlett Alumni Association has become a respected part of the Bartlett community over the years. Since the first Leadership class graduated in 1990, many leaders have emerged and have become vital business and civic leaders. Many are serving on boards and commissions associated with the betterment of Bartlett, including the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, the Planning Commission, the Design & Review Commission, the Industrial Development Board, and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Leadership graduates are encouraged to remain involved through the alumni association for many reasons: for the progress of the community, to enrich their lives by giving back, to help others by using the knowledge attained in the Leadership program, to develop personal and career goals, and to support each other and the community as a whole.
The key to leadership is vision.
LBAA’s vision is a critical element to the future of Bartlett.
LEADERSHIP PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS
1990: Began the early planning stages of forming a Cultural Arts Committee under the Chamber.
1991: Joined the Class of 1990 and established the Bartlett Community Chorus, the Bartlett Community Concert Band, and a Children’s Chorus. (The Children’s Chorus is no longer in existence.)
The Bartlett/Cordova Rotary Club was formed.
1992: Established a Bartlett Telephone Hotline that electronically gave up-to-date information about various events and activities taking place in Bartlett. (This is no longer is existence.)
Coordinated and co-sponsored a performance of the Tennessee Summer Symphony in Bartlett.
1993: Established a communication system between area health professionals to keep them aware of individuals with histories of drug abuse and fraudulent prescriptions.
Members of the 1990 Class assist the City of Bartlett in opening the first recycling center .
1994: Began planning and implementing an Annual Pancake Breakfast in honor of the Police and Fire Departments each spring.
The Leadership Bartlett Volunteer Awards were established to recognize hard working volunteers throughout the area in Youth, Adult, Senior and LB Alumni categories.
1997: Youth Leadership Bartlett was formulated. LBAA became a yearly sponsor of YLB.
Purchased a bicycle for the Bartlett Police Department.
Brought dialog between the Police Department, the Parks & Recreation Department, businesses, and churches on solutions to curb juvenile crime in Bartlett.
1999: Organized fundraising for the Bartlett Education Foundation.
Implemented the “Annual Animal Spayed and Neutered Program” in the Bartlett area.
The first annual Leadership Forum was presented.
2001: Made Bartlett a separate listing in the telephone directory, instead of under Memphis listings.
2002: The Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings put on cable TV.
Began the early planning stages of putting street banners on the major streets in Bartlett.
